Waaazzz Apppenning HydroCanna???

I'm completely new at this site, stumbled across it while looking up some info on Bushmaster and noticed that Shaggy and LBH had been hanging out here. Good enough for them? Definitely good enough for me.

I'm a coco grower. Been in Canna, Botanicare, Sunleaves, and General Hydroponics. My next grow I will be trying out a combination of Botanicare and Roots Organic Coco Mix. I'm about 2 weeks from my 5th coco harvest and have already begun my 6th.

I'll post the pictures once I resize them. Apparently my resolution is too baller for HydroCanna to handle:no:

The purpose of my thread is two fold. I would like to assist other growers who would like to try out coco, be it hydro, organic, or Hydro-Organic. I'd also like the input of my peers as I'm not an expert (yet :super:).

The Equipment:
5x5 Mylar tent
6" 400cfm inline fan, 4" 180cfm blower, 4" axial, two 16" circulation, 8" circular fan.
1000w Switchable ballast w/ 1000w Eye Sunlux HPS and Coolsun 6
400w Switchable ballast w/ 400w Phillips MH
Two 2.5'x5' tables
Two thermometers/hygrometers
5000btu window AC unit
3 gallon SmartPots
Hanna GroCheck pH/EC multi-meter
Two 18 gallon reservoirs (15 gallon really)
And the variety of other supplies one might need

The Mixture:
I used about 10L of Botanicare CocoGro that I had pre-expanded using a weak solution of water and rhizotonic amended with Humboldt nutrients Myco Maximum. This was then mixed with 1.5cuft of Roots Organic hydroponic Coco mix. The mix includes Coco fiber, perlite, pumice, worm castings, bat guano, kelp meal, greensand, soluble kelp, leonardite, and probably a few other things.

The final mixture is mostly coco, with a little extra aeration material to offset the organics. Recommended to feed at 5.5 to 6.5 pH, I will be using 6.0 as my midway point allowing the coco to do the rest of the buffering. I may run lower, 5.8pH, during flowering to assist in the utilization of PK bloom enhancers.

The Process:

Seedlings will be started in pure Botanicare cocogro in party cups and allowed to grow for about 2 weeks in that before being transplanted. They will be transplanted to 3 gallon Smart Pots which I will be filling with only 2 gallons of the coco mix. This creates a wide base for the roots and will allow me to water as frequently as I desire. More media isn't required for the length of the grow. Since I only have 16 smartpots a few plants might need to spend a little time in 1 gallon planters if I don't have enough for sure females, or if I have more than 16 seeds actually start (usually 100%).

Flowering will be carried out in the larger tent. I will use the 1000w bulb at the top of the tent to cover the canopy. Plants will be placed in a circle around the 400w MH bulb (uncovered, but with the vortex fan blowing the heat upwards to the vented cool sun). In this way I will have a vertical 400w MH and a horizontal 1000w HPS.

I am planning on finishing 6 to 10 plants, probably 8. Modest harvest expectations given space and shorter veg period. I have been scrogging, topping, and LSTing plants since I started growing and would like to just run them "au natural" this time around. If one of the plants is too vigorous I'll employ a variety of training methods, like super cropping and/or LST. To keep the vegetative period productive and short I'm not going to be topping. Aiming for large central colas. The vertical bulb used in flowering should more than facilitate healthy under growth as well.

The watering habits as seedlings, and after the transplanting, will be similar to soil watering habits. I will allow the media to essentially go dry (almost, but not quite) between feedings/waterings. When the plants need a drink every day this indicates a full and healthy root zone so then I will begin feeding in the morning with nutrients and then watering with plain water in the evenings before bed. Twice a day, every day, in 2 gallon planters, should be fine when it comes to a healthy root system in coco.

The seeds were placed in the coco February 8th. 18/20 were above ground on February 14th (took a little longer than normal, but nothing crazy). A 19th appeared a few days ago but I think there's something wrong with it, explaining why it hatched so much later.

I am planning to transplant to the 3 gallon planters with 2 gallons of media and migrate them to a 2x4 tent around March 5th, earlier if need be. Flowering will begin around March 12th, at about the 4 week mark. Harvest will probably be in the first week of May, give or take.

The Genetics:
Planted Eight Nirvana Ice plants (White genetics). Growing one of them out now in a 1 gallon container and it seems to be doing well for 6 weeks in. Nothing crazy.

Also planted Twelve of my own strain Element Zero. This is a Big Bud x (G13xHash plant) mixture I made from seeds acquired from a dispensary in Santa Cruz, CA. Historically a heavy yield, with a sweet and peppery flavor. Purple tendency from the Mr. Nice (G13xHashplant) cross. 90% Indica with the occasional Sativa-esque blend.

The Nutrients:
I would like to premise this section by saying I know what I am doing with my elements. Please keep the whole "K.I.S.S." attitude to yourselves in this regard. For new growers I totally agree and would prescribe KISS, Maxibloom or Lucas/H3ad/Rez... I personally use a custom spreadsheet/calculator to determine the approximate ppm levels based on the percentages of guaranteed elements taken from the labels. I then translate the promised concentration (parts per hundred converted to parts per million and then compensated for total solution volume) and use a x2.18 calculation (canna tests 18% higher on the EC than promised) to predict the final EC.

Then I mix the nutrients and test the EC. It is always nearly dead on

Using Canna Coco A+B, Cal-Mag Plus, and a little Liquid Karma and Pro-Tekt for Veg.
Cutting the nutrients to 1/2 strength after transplanting.
Bloom enhancers I will use include Botanicare CNS17 Ripe, Hydroplex, General Hydroponics Liquid KoolBloom, and AN Bud Candy.

I am throwing around some other ideas as well. Perhaps a kelp based foliar spray along with Snow Storm and maybe some BioCanna BioBoost. I'm also debating picking up some more Rhizotonic. I love the stuff. I have a bottle of Grow Big, and a bottle of Tiger Bloom I could use in coco by supplementing some Cal-Mag. I'm also thinking about trying out the entire CNS 17 system on some plants. So this grow could turn into a bit of experimentation... But then again... Maybe I'll just stick with the Canna and the required PK bloom boosters to correct the ratios for weeks 3-7 of flowering (essentially mimicking the predicted ratios if I were to be using Cannazym and Boost Accelerator).

The EC of the solutions will fluctuate from week to week but it will usually stick somewhere between .8 and 1.4 EC. These are on the lower end of the spectrum but I chose this to avoid burning and to rely on the coco mix to provide and balance out the nutrition.

During Bloom there is a period of two weeks or so (5ish to 7ish) where 1.9 EC will be used at the most. Of course I'll be listening to the plants and tailoring my EC as required but I've had good results with that last push so long as the plants are not stressed going into it. Most nutrient companies suggest this as well in their program calculations.

So there it be. I figured someone needed to put something in this coco forum. Might as well be the new kid, right?

Thank you for the warm welcome Polluted.

I'm working on getting some pictures put together so you can all see what I've been working with. I take everything at a super high resolution and most of the pictures are over 5MB, so I'll need to GIMP them down to get them posted. Soon :)

I have a many, many, more pictures... Especially of this Winter 10/11 grow, including a great deal of bud porn. Here's a pretty much up to date picture of my 5x5 tent and 1000w HPS. I am running Cole Train, Lemon Skunk, Sour Cream, Wappa, Chronic, Warlock, Ice, Motavation, Sensi Star, and Element Zero in there... Multi-strain in coco is tons'o'fun.

If you'd like some info on those strains or some individual pictures of them just lemme know and I'll scale a few more images so I can upload them here.

everyone loves good bud porn, but there are a few of us that like setup shots and shit like that....helps to give others and idea of how you have things running and for newbies to get a variety of methods to choose from. everyone's spot is a bit different so it's nice to see what others have done to provide our favorite plants with the best environment we can afford lol. we don't mind the veg. process, ya get to see what pheno's will be strongest before ya ever start flowering.

Coco is great stuff. First time I used some canna I was wondering what the hell took me so long to try it out.

Nice bud shots too man, that's a packed tent!

Here are a couple shots of what I have named "Sister Mary."
I found three seeds in a few ounces of DNA Genetics Cole Train from my last grow. The father heritage is unknown but they have all kept very true to the original Cole Train (SSH Jasmine cut x Arcata Trainwreck). Delicious stuff.

Here they are at day 47. I think they need at least another 2 weeks before they are finished. Might need three. Not a big deal either way.

Update, about 2 weeks from seeds

I figured I'd update you all on how things have gone during the last week or so.

Here we were on Saturday, the 26th.
View attachment 32155View attachment 32156

Since Saturday my 2x4 tent and 400w ballast has opened up. I cleaned out the tent and set up a little pvc table and got the MH bulb going. I just got my revegged clones freshly transplanted to 1 gallon rootmakers using freshly recycled coco from the harvested plants.

Up to this point everything you see was done with a combination of 23w 6500k, 25w 5500K, and 27w 5100K daylight CFL bulbs.

These plants will spend another 8-9 days in the tent like this under the MH bulb.

Then the plants started from seed will be transplanted to 2 gallons of coco mix smartpots. They will also need to be moved into the 5x5 tent at that point and will also be put under the 1000w HPS.

All these plants are on the same nutrient plan at the moment. I'm running about 1.1ec using 5ml Canna Coco A+B, 4ml Cal-Mag Plus, 3ml Liquid Karma, and 4ml Pro-Tekt.

I'm going to be upping everything by a 1ml per gallon probably this weekend. Taking the EC to about 1.2 to 1.3 (600ppm to 650ppm).

See you all around soon.

Re: Update, about 2 weeks from seeds

Hey Snow, I only checked this out briefly a week ago but now that I've had time to read this further what a great thread and pics too! Once I get a couple cycles under my belt I think I'm going to build a small tent and try this out.

Awesome Stuff here!

Re: Update, about 2 weeks from seeds

When the lights come back on tonight (9pm pst) they will be fed a mild solution of nutrients. Most of the plants look like they are ACHING for them. Being that they are all working on their 4th and 5th leaf sets... I don't blame them...

They will be getting a nice dosage of A+B at 5ml per gallon. 3ml per gallon of Cal-Mag Plus (I have 60ppm tap water) and another 3ml of Pro-Tekt. To top it all off I'll be going with a good 8ml to 10ml of liquid karma going in this feeding to help keep them from stressing out about the upcoming transplant. I'll be doing that for the next week or so.

Right now I'm looking for a good root stimulant that isn't like $65 a liter.
I'll take suggestions :)

B'Cuzz roots and Greenfuse Root Stimulator are basically the same thing and that seems to fit the bill but the reviews on it suck. I've used Rhizotonic but it can be expensive. I'd like to try CES G-Rex.

Anyone know of any others? I'll probably just go with superthrive...

I'm basically aiming for an algae and seaweed derived vitamin and amino-acid solution that has a proven record of stimulating root growth. I'm really looking to keep my roots SUPER happy this grow.

Roots first!

Update, ~3 weeks from sprout

I must say that the last week under the 400w MH bulb has done wonders for these plants. Really, really, fantastic growth out of them recently.

The solution has been at 1.1 ec, and just over 5.8pH.

I pulled a plant earlier today and saw that the roots are just starting to climb back up the edges of the cup. This indicates to me that it's about time to transplant. I got the tent all ready to go but I didn't have enough water ready to flush all the new mixture and get it ready for transplanting into. I'll need to finish doing that tomorrow while I complete the summer ventilation setup.

I'll post a video of the grow room and a little more detail about everything probably sometime on the 10th after the plants are transplanted.

Here are the pictures. Compare them to a week ago for fun. They are working on their 6th,7th, and 8th nodes depending on the plant.

Looks good, what are the lower lights specifically used for, well other than the obvious that is?
